APA Tip! The Leading Zero

What's a Leading Zero?

The zero before a decimal place (e.g., 0.1)

When Do I Use a Leading Zero?

Put a leading zero for values where the index in question can take a value lower than -1 or higher than +1. That is, generally for all of your statistics (e.g., F, t, b, and beta).

e.g., Hedges'g = 0.24

When Do I NOT use a Leading Zero?

You do not put a leading zero before any values that do not go lower than -1 or higher than +1. E.g., r, or p values.

e.g., p = .023 or r = .10 - because these values can never be higher then 1.
